Whenever we hear the words “Martial Arts”, we automatically think it’s more of a man’s sport because we assume it’s violent, not feminine, and women shouldn’t be doing that sort of thing. Well, actually martial art has become more popular with Taekwon-Do, Judo and Aikido ranking some of the best martial arts for women. Women taking up the sport just keeps rising, and this can only be because of the great benefits it provides!

The fitness world is always coming up with new classes and exercises to help us get that dream body we all desire about. But one sport that sometimes doesn’t cross our minds all the time is martial arts.

Martial Arts is a great form of exercise and can tone up the body. However, it’s more than just a great workouts. There are many other benefits than just fitness and all women should take advantage of it.

Below are just some of the benefits of martial arts for women:

Self-Defense

The most popular reason why women learn martial arts is the benefit of knowing how to defend themselves. As a woman, being on the streets at night is something we shouldn’t be afraid of, and learning martial arts will help us overcome that fear and make us feel safe. The different types of martial arts taught at VBSDA teach you techniques that you can use to take on opponents twice your size and stronger than you. When you learn self-defense, you become fearless, you gain confidence and that is an attractive quality to have for a woman.

Good Posture For Women

You will learn to position yourself in fighting stances which can improve your balance and posture. Having a good posture can give you a better digestive system and help your organs to function properly. A woman with good posture shows confidence and adds height to your appearance whilst looking more graceful and elegant. It can also help reduce tension and pain in the neck, shoulders and back.

Reduce stress – Better mood

It is normal for us to stress in our everyday lives. However,  for anyone with a stressful job or lifestyle, high stress level can lead to aggression and anger, which if allowed to build up without an outlet, can become a major problem.

Researchers have found that participating in a regular exercise routine is one of the best ways to improve your mood. Practicing martial arts is not only a good way to relieve stress and frustration, but may actually help to make you happier. The endorphins released by physical activity appear to be active in your body for as many as four hours after exercise. The less stressed you are, the happier you will be and this will be infectious to the people around you.

Toned and Fit

As the weight drops off and the muscles feel more toned you will also notice your skin will become tighter and firmer. Combining martial arts with the right diet in place can help reduce fat.  High-intensity cardio techniques like Taekwondo can increase muscle tone and strength. Also, watch your flexibility improve over time as the more martial arts you do the more stretching is required. Being flexible will improve your fighting, increase your speed and coordination and reduce the risk of injuries.

Improved Reflexes

Research has found that by participating in martial arts, you not only improve your reflexes while performing the activity, but actually experience faster reaction times during all activities of your life. This is very important in a number of daily activities, such as driving.

Focus And Stillness

As Bruce Lee pointed out, behind the punches, kicks and knees, a true martial artist learns to sit with himself and see where his weaknesses are. As a martial artist, your will learn what it is to be still, challenged and focused. Oftentimes, we take a few minutes after a high intensity and energy class to meditate and calm our mind.

Camaraderie

Martial arts does have a spirit of competition involved, especially when sparring or ranking up, but more important than that is how it fosters camaraderie and friendship among people who train together.
